Learning to Care for Your Eyes
We live in a digital age. People are spending more time on screens than ever before as we use our phones and laptops for work, play, and gathering information. Spending so much time on screens can cause some significant but preventable eye problems.
Book an appointment and your doctor at Henry Family Vision Care can provide you with the information and tools you need to learn about digital eye strain and how to prevent it from causing vision issues.
What Is Digital Eye Strain?
Digital eye strain occurs when you spend too much time focusing on objects at a close distance. We call the condition digital eye strain because, most of the time, those objects are mobile devices and laptops.
We aren’t used to focusing at such a close distance for an extended period. The more time our eyes spend looking at screens, the more effort they use.
Digital Eye Strain Symptoms
Learning the symptoms of digital eye strain can help you recognize when to adjust how you use screens. Symptoms of digital eye strain include:
- Blurry vision
- Headaches
- Watery eyes
- Dry eye
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
Dealing with Digital Eye Strain
Digital eye strain can be challenging, especially when it leads to headaches and blurry vision. Your doctor can recommend a few strategies to help you overcome digital eye strain and reduce the stress on your eyes.
20-20-20 Rule
To reduce the amount of time you spend focusing on a screen at a close distance, every 20 minutes you should look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Keep a Clean Screen
When your screen is full of dust and fingerprints, you spend more effort straining to focus on small objects like text and images on your screen. A microfiber towel works well to keep your screen clear.
Adjust Your Position
Adjusting your screen position can put less stress on your eyes while reducing neck and shoulder pain. Place your screen at arm’s length away from you and at 20 degrees below eye level to reduce stress.
